Statement on the 2024 Election Results

Here at Disability Victory, we are processing the outcome of the 2024 election and what it means for disabled people in the United States. Every issue is a disability issue–and right now, many of us are fearful of what this means for our community’s access to health care and education, preservation of our civil rights, and ability to survive.

The rights and safety of disabled people have been under threat prior to this election: mask bans, state-level abortion bans, attacks on queer and trans rights, attempts to roll back disability rights laws, criminalization of homelessness, and rollbacks to pandemic protections have all put disabled people at risk. In many ways, we have been fighting from a position of defense as opposed to expanding our rights and building a society that supports us all, and that fight is physically and emotionally draining. We encourage you to take the time you need to process, rest, and take care of yourselves.

As we look to the future, building community will be more important than ever. Disability Victory remains committed to supporting disabled leaders who are building up our communities. Every school board member who fights for the future of disabled, racially marginalized, and queer and trans children; every city councilor who advocates for accessible infrastructure and inclusive communities; every library board member who believes in access as opposed to censorship makes a difference.

We thank the many disabled leaders around the country who have been fighting for progressive change at every level as candidates, staff, volunteers, organizers, advocates, and activists. Disability Victory is honored to fight alongside you as you make our communities and our country more accessible, inclusive, and supportive.
